Purpose – The concepts of this course are based on the Georgia Performance Standards focusing on five major areas: Cells, Genetics, Organisms, Ecology and Evolution. This year students will develop scientific process skills, laboratory techniques and an understanding of the fundamental principles of living organisms. Students will explore biological science as a process. The Georgia Milestones Assessment (EOC) will be administered for Biology in April, which covers the Georgia Performance Standards for both semesters.
Course Objectives
1st Qtr Cells
Weeks1-3 Safety and Procedures, Chemistry of Life
4-5 Cellular Structure and Function
6-7 Cellular Transport
8-9 Cell Cycle
2nd Qtr Genetics
Weeks 1-3 DNA/RNA
4-5 Probability
6-7 Meiosis and Heredity
8-9 Alterations in DNA
3rd Qtr Organisms and Ecology
Weeks 1-3 Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
4-5 Classification of Living Things
6-7 Energy Flow and Ecosystems
9-8 Viruses
4th Qtr Evolution
Weeks 1-3 History of Evolution
4-5 Natural Selection
6-7 Role of Evolution Today
Instructional Method – The instructor will utilize a variety of methods including lecture and overhead notes, class discussion, assigned readings, vocabulary, labs, independent research assignments and educational films.
Assessment Method – Major tests which fall at the end of every instructional unit (1-3 weeks); projects; formal labs with formal lab journal entries; practical quizzes; daily grades and classroom participation. Notebook grades will be taken randomly. Extra credit opportunities will be provided periodically.

Emergency basis only with agenda, unless otherwise noted by medical form on file in office.
Late Work
Late work will be accepted for 50% credit only until we have tested over that chapter or unit. Once we have tested over the material, late work will NOT be accepted.
Lab Safety
Lab Safety is of utmost importance. Any violation of lab rules will result in an incomplete grade for the lab and removal from the laboratory. A second lab removal will result in complete removal from the lab for the remainder of the year.
Class Behavior
All Fayette County High School Student Policy Handbook rules apply, as well as the following:
1. Students are to complete all assignments before arriving to class and are to bring all the necessary materials, including textbook, pen/pencil to class EVERY SINGLE DAY.
2. Students are to sit in their assigned seats and to pay attention when the tardy bell rings, which signals class has started.
3. The bell doesn’t dismiss the class, the teacher dismisses the class.
4. BYOT – May be used for educational purposes only under the direct guidance of a teacher.
5. Students are expected NOT to harm anyone, throw things, use profanity, deface property, play games, tamper with equipment, etc. in the classroom.
If there are violations of this policy, consequences will be rendered. Consequences will include verbal warning, detention and referral. In general, if students disrupt the teaching and learning process for any reason, the teacher has the right and obligation to eliminate the disruption.
